Great Klons is a folky project from Rochester, New York, created by lo-fi, psychedelic-folk musician Johnny Jewel. His EP, Forever Changers, came out in July of this year, and it’s perfect for anyone into their folk/psychedelic rock music – if that’s you, then you should definitely check this EP out!

Opening up this EP is the dreamy sounding title track, Forever Changers. Lovely 60s style guitar melodies run through this piece in a mellow fashion, with a gorgeous string section appearing in the background to add a nice textural quality to the piece. The vocals have a dreamy and ethereal vibe, setting the tone for the rest of the EP nicely.
Drifting On The Wheel is slightly more upbeat, although it’s still fairly mid-tempo. A prominent bassline runs through the music, with odd little guitar flourishes coming into the tune on occasion, as the percussion keeps the song in time. The strings appear yet again, although they’re less of a focus here.
Stable Land takes things down a notch, this time focusing on an acoustic guitar instead of an electric one. Some computerised percussion is added after a while, but the guitars remain the mainstay of the song, although there are some interesting keyboard effects going on here too. The style of the track really allows the vocals to shine through.
All Jazz starts out with a unique sounding drum beat, which is slightly at odds with the organ that appears shortly afterwards, although it works surprisingly well, adding a cool, psychedelic vibe to proceedings. It’s more of a minimalist track than the others, although there is still a lot going on in the background, if you take a moment to try and appreciate everything!
Leave It Standing is another stripped-back tune, featuring a gorgeous fingerpicked acoustic guitar melody that progresses the music, alongside some mystical backing effects. The backing effects make the track sound very chilled out and relaxing, perfect for listening to on a bright summer day like today.
Forever Changers is an interesting EP full of imagination and talent – those into their more traditional folk probably won’t get as much out of Great Klons’ music, but I would still recommend you check it out!
