EP Review: Everything But The Everything – A & B Sides, Vol. 1

We reviewed a song by Everything But The Everything a while ago titled Jump, also interviewing the band soon after. I was very excited to see their new EP, A & B Sides, Vol. 1, had been released and wanted to catch up with the band. If you read the other articles we wrote about them, then make sure you check this EP out!

There are just two tracks on this EP, leaving the listener wanting for more! Ironically, the first song is titled We Want More and acts as a great introductory song to Everything But The Everything’s music. It opens with a cool bassline and an upbeat percussive beat that lends itself well to the indie genre, particularly the sound that became so prominent in the 80s. Little spidery guitar lines appear every so often, with the low vocals being reminiscent of the post-punk style. It’s a catchy song with an eerie vibe, which I loved.

Open Your Mind sounds more like a typical rock/punk rock song at first, with a cool guitar riff starting the music – the rhythm guitar sounds distorted and fuzzy, yet there are also some melodic little clean guitar lines that play over the rhythm guitar, making for something that sounds quite unique. The vocals are lower at times, but the pitch is raised on the chorus, showing a great deal of vocal versatility. Some synths arrive later on, working well with the crawling bassline the song has.

Everything But The Everything are a unique proposition in the modern age, sounding like nothing else at the moment. If you’re into your classic indie or the post-punk genre, then A & B Side, Vol. 1 is for you!
