Welsh musician Sabine has been building up a lot of traction in the music world recently, with her latest track, Forever and a day, being featured on BBC Introducing recently. If you’ve not checked her music out yet, this is the perfect introduction!
By Jane Howkins
You recently released a track titled Forever and a day, which we reviewed. What can you tell us about the song?
I moved to Wales last year and fell in love! I already had a basic melody in mind and when the lyrics followed after, I decided I wanted to make it a love song.
How has the reception been so far, and where can Forever and a day be purchased?
I’ve been so pleased with the reaction to the track, the support from online publications such as yourselves and also from BBC Introducing has been wonderful.
Do you have any more singles planned for release soon?
I’m working on new music all the time, I’m constantly writing so I’m hoping to release new music in the new year.
Are there any plans to release a full-length album or EP?
I’d love to make an album one day, but at the moment I’m focusing on improving my own demo making skills and continuing to write the music I want to make, one single at a time.
What is the writing and recording process like for you?
I record voice notes all the time! I get melodies that pop into my head that sometimes come with lyrics – l’ll take time to go through them and sometimes they get pieced together, whereas at other times I’ll just work off one voice note and go from there. I’ll decide what story I want to tell before I get the guitar out to sort a basic chord structure, and then build on that with other instruments that I want. I like being super prepared when I get into the studio, so I’ll make sure I know all the backing vocals and harmonies that I want, so that I use the time in the studio as effectively as possible.
Has the pandemic hindered your work much?
I did have an acoustic tour planned so obviously this was cancelled more then once. I’ve since moved across the border for work, but I learnt so much in terms of the demo process and recording remotely during the pandemic and I’ve been able to take this knowledge with me. I feel much more confident and autonomous in the music making process.
Your music has a folky sound. What/who influences you most as an artist? What have you been listening to recently?
Generally speaking my main inspiration is drawn from female artists with a unique sound; Joan Armatrading, Norah Jones. I’ve been listening to a lot of Cate Canning – I love her sound. I also love listening to girl bands like HAIM and Muna who are just creating some brilliant music with a fresh vibe – I saw HAIM in London in the summer and they were absolutely incredible.
You’re based near Powys. What is the music scene like in your part of the world?
There’s a lot of really great musicians around here, it’s a very chilled out place to live and there’s a a lot of hidden gems for playing live.
Do you have any tour dates lined up for the UK?
I’m in the process of getting a new guitarist so live dates are on pause at the moment – but I’m looking forward to performing live again in 2023 in some of those hidden gems!
Any last words for the fans?
Thank you for the support! No current plans for an album or an EP at the moment, but an album is the ultimate dream for any artist I think so hopefully one day!
