EP Review: Isabel Wing – Late July

Isabel Wing is a captivating new singer-songwriter on the scene, hailing from the great city of Los Angeles. She’s been playing music from a very young age, and you can really feel the power of her influences in her music, as displayed in her new EP, Late July. The EP has only just been released today, so make sure you check it out before it propels her into the bigtime!

Turning Blue opens this four track EP up with a gorgeous fingerpicked acoustic guitar melody, before Isabel’s stunning vocals appear. Her vocals are very emotive, sounding perfectly pronounced throughout. The lyrics are extremely special, drawing you in instantly. A little piano motif appears to follow the guitar lines, adding another element of beauty to this captivating tune.

Giving Up The Game has a similar style to the previous song, having quite a stripped-down quality. It’s just Isabel and her gorgeous guitar playing, with the odd piano note performing in the background. However, the music is that beautiful that it doesn’t really need anything more, sounding stunning in its simplicity. Isabel’s vocals raise up higher and higher on the chorus, showing a great depth to her voice.

Late July is a slightly slower song, featuring Isabel strumming the guitar, instead of picking notes out. This allows the EP to change things up slightly, without differing too much from the original musical template set out. Electric slide guitar notes accompany the main acoustic guitar, adding a country element to the otherwise folky music. It sounds incredibly beautiful in a haunting way.

Dolores Park is the final song on Late July, leaving me longing for more. The fingerpicked guitar style is back here, picking the tempo up slightly. Isabel’s vocals go a little lower at times on this tune, opening up her vocal range even more. The electric guitar is a little more prominent here, adding a nice counter-melody to her vocals. It’s a great closing song and one of my favourite tracks on the entire EP.

Isabel Wing is a fantastic new artist on the scene, and one I’ll definitely be looking out for in the future. Late July sounds fantastic and shows great promise for her future – if you like folk music, you should check this EP out!
