I recently featured the fabulous Zach Churchill in one of my Monthly Favorites round-up reviews – specifically his song, Surrender. He’s an amazing artist, melding together elements of folk, country and Americana into one cool package. You can find out more about Zach below!
By Jane Howkins
You recently released a single titled Surrender. What can you tell us about the track?
Surrender is about digging for a bottom, being unwilling to give up whatever it is you’re addicted to. I have been sober for some timer from drugs and alcohol, and I often wonder what it is that gives one person the willingness to surrender, when another person cannot. It’s kind of a mystery. I call my surrender the gift of desperation.
How has the reception to Surrender been so far, and where can the song be purchased?
It’s been great. People seem to connect to the theme and also the aggressive, urgent vibe of the track. It’s available on all major platforms and streaming services!
Do you plan to release any more singles in the near future?
Surrender was the lead single for my new album, which dropped on October 28th. The second single was Hover and the third single was Reach You, dropped in August and September respectively.
You released an album back in January, titled Heartbreak & Hope. What can you tell us about the album?
Heartbreak & Hope was my first major, full-length album. I finished it right before the Covid pandemic hit in February of 2020, and did not release it until January 2022. That album really encapsulates my twenties, struggles with addiction, early sobriety and relationships.
Do you plan to release an EP or an album anytime soon?
My second full length album, Greater Than, just dropped today on October 28th! It’s available on all platforms.
Did the pandemic hinder your work much?
I was writing quite a bit during the pandemic, as it offered a lot of free time I didn’t have before. It was an uncertain period of time for all of us, so it brought up a lot of internal self-reflection.
Your music contains elements of rock, pop and indie. What/who influences you most as an artist? What have you been listening to recently?
My major influences are Led Zeppelin, Jeff Buckley, Radiohead, David Bowie, Bob Dylan and John Prine. Singer-songwriters, classic rock and good storytellers in general. Lately I have been listening to The 1975.
You’re based in Orange County. What is the music scene like in your part of the world?
Orange County has a few venues that lots of national and international touring musicians stop at between Los Angeles and San Diego. The local scene is also quite eclectic and thriving.
Do you have any tour dates lined up for the UK?
Not at the moment, but I’m hoping to set some up for 2023!
Any last words for the fans?
