Interview: Stone Portal

Stone Portal are a British rock collaboration, with their song, Stealing Airwaves being a fantastic showcase for their sound. I decided to find out a little more about the band by having a chat with Kenneth from the band – read on below to see how we got on!

You recently released a new track titled Stealing Airwaves, which we reviewed. What can you tell us about the song?

I guess the song is just a real grab by the scruff of the neck with that opening. The energetic vibe was the final product and was different to the initial demo, so I ripped up the lyrics and went to a back-to-basics approach. Lyric wise it does look very basic, but I found it the hardest song to write. Partly because I was trying to be too smart. Instead, I just went with the energy of the song, and I thought Stealing Airwaves really complemented the vibe and so worked off that.

How has the reception been so far to Stealing Airwaves been, and where can it be purchased?

It’s available on all streaming platforms. It’s received some great write-ups and reviews so far – from speaking to friends and family etc, they’ve been really supportive.

Do you plan to release any more singles in the near future? Are there any plans to release an album or EP?

The second single has already been released called Smoke and Mirrors. In fact, the album, also titled Stealing Airwaves has been released. There are another two albums following up this one which have already been written. I’m just in the process of getting vocals laid and then it will be on to the mixing and mastering stage.

The band is a collaboration. How did you get together and how is the writing and recording process?

I started writing and composing during lockdown. I then reached out to Ryan Jones who produced it all, and Ged who performed the vocals. From my point of view, these guys add the real magic to the single/album. I feel very fortunate to have been able to collaborate with such talent.

Your music belongs firmly in the rock genre. What/who influences you most as artists? What have you been listening to recently?

Influence wise, I wouldn’t know where to start. I think all of us consume from a huge catalogue of musicians. From me personally, I just try and follow what I feel is right inside and the other two add their unique style to it. It seems to have worked out.

You’re based in the UK. Where exactly are you based and what is the music scene like there at the moment?

I’m based in Inverness. The scene is definitely picking up, but it still feels slightly out of the way from where any major bands would come to gig. However, it’s growing and there’s some unreal talent in all genres popping up.
Ged is from Livingston and Ryan is based in Liverpool.

Did the pandemic hinder you much?

In some ways, there’s a lot I’m grateful for from the pandemic. I picked up the guitar, songs and poems started pouring out of me and I’ve never looked back.

Do you have any tour dates lined up for the UK?

There’s no dates lined up for any gigs. It’s more of an online project. Maybe in the future the material can get played live, but in the short term, it’s great just making some music and getting it out there.

Any last words for the fans?

Massive thank you for the great feedback so far. Definitely more to come!
