Interview: We Are To Blame

Swedish metal band We Are To Blame are bursting onto the music scene with their new song Breathe, showing great promise for their future. I love their unique rock sound – if you did too, then check out this interview with Johan from the band!

By Jane Howkins

You recently released a new track titled Breathe, which we reviewed. What can you tell us about the song?

Breathe was our main single for the EP, with a great music video (produced by Joakim Aukea) to go with it. We are sure that it is gonna be a hit live as well!

The lyrical theme is anxiety, about feeling crushed beneath it and feeling like you are losing your breath. The music is very rhythmic yet melodic, and hopefully very catchy!

How has the reception been so far to Breathe been so far, and where can it be purchased?

The reception has been great, far above what we expected! It definitely seems like there are people out there that like what we do, so we are working hard to make sure as many people as possible get to hear us.

Do you have any more singles set for release?

We released 2 singles prior to Breathe, which were Losing Rhythm and All I Want To Say. Losing Rhythm was our first single, an up-tempo guitar driven song which we also released as a radio version for regional radio. All I Want To Say is a symphonic beast of a track, featuring a duet with the fantastic Tom Englund (Evergrey).

Do you plan to release any more singles in the near future?

Our second EP Duality II is already recorded, mixed and mastered. We are figuring out some of the visual and distribution stuff before we set a release date, but there will be 2 singles leading up to the EP. Also, we have something special planned for December…

Are there any plans to release an album or EP?

As stated earlier, our second EP is more or less ready to be released. We have also started to write new material, but we don’t have any dates in mind yet.

Your music belongs firmly in the metal genre. What/who influences you most as artists? What have you been listening to recently?

We all have a very widespread palette of influences, which I believe contributes to the strengths of the band. Personally, I was striving to land somewhere in the middle of everything that I enjoy. If I had to name 3 bands that was most influential to me, it would probably be Iron Maiden, In Flames and Evergrey. The last album that went on repeat was Evergrey’s A Headless Portrait.

You’re based in Sweden. What is the music scene like there at the moment?

That really depends on how you look at it. Musically, it’s fantastic! We have so many great artists, musicians. songwriters and producers in our country. At the same time, it has kinda devalued music (at least in the metal scene) to the point that playing for free (or even paying) has become the norm. I think i am noticing a slight shift post-pandemic, so hopefully we will see a positive development in the near future.

Did the pandemic hinder you much?

In some ways, yes. We had quite a few pre-production meetups that was cancelled. On the other hand, it provided us with the time to launch the band properly. We were definitely less affected than a lot of our colleagues out there.

Do you have any tour dates lined up for the UK?

Not at the time of writing this, but if you would like us to play there make a request to your local venues!

Any last words for the fans?

Thanks for listening and supporting us – and we will see you with more music in 2023!
