Interview: Davie Furey

Irish musician and singer-songwriter Davie Furey is a new discovery of mine, producing catchy folk songs with a tinge of rock about them. His latest single Downtown Parade caught my eye and I knew I had to find out more! The track can also be streamed at the end of this interview.

You recently released a single titled Downtown Parade, which we reviewed. What can you tell us about the track?

The track is part of a collection of songs for a new album which will be released in 2023. Everything you need to know about the song is in the song itself, so the best way to describe it is to listen to it.

How has the reception been so far, and where can Downtown Parade be purchased?

I’ve been pleased with the reception that Downtown Parade has received so far. Plenty of radio play and some lovely comments from the listeners. You can purchase the song from all download stores like Apple etc, and from my website www.daviefurey.com

Do you plan to release any more singles in the near future?

Yeah, well that’s the name of the game… to release music and sing it live. Hopefully there will be another single early next year, ahead of the album being released.

An album called Haunted Streets was released recently. What can you tell us about the album?

Oh, I loved making that album and singing those songs. I’ve really connected with them and so have some of the listeners, thankfully. It got more coverage than any other album I’ve released (there was only 2 before that) and the reviews and reaction it received was beautiful. Releasing it during the pandemic was strange, as I couldn’t tour it straight away – nevertheless it was a joy to hear that people really enjoyed it.

Have you started writing for another album or EP?

Yeah, I’ve done a lot of recording this year which will amount to two different albums. Downtown Parade and the kind of vibe it brings belongs to a set of songs which will be released next year. The other album is a quieter, more folky album. I’ll be putting the finishing touches to that next year.

Did the pandemic hinder your work much?

Oh yeah, gigging wise we were wiped out. Thankfully, I remained healthy throughout and the pace of life changed, which was a good thing, in my opinion. Perspectives changed, things we may not have noticed before were suddenly before our eyes, I gathered myself a little and there was a kinda reset.

Your music has an indie folk sound. What/who influences you most as an artist? What have you been listening to recently?

I’m easily influenced! Songwriters, authors and poets generally inspire me. The goodness and badness in people inspire me. I’m inspired by the regeneration of nature, the hearts of heroes and the darkness of wanna be dictators.

You’re based in Ireland. What is the music scene like in your part of the world?

It has changed a lot over the years. It’s eclectic, diverse, powerful and really really interesting.

Do you have any tour dates lined up for the UK?

Well, after the backlog cause by the pandemic, I couldn’t really do any this year. Next year is looking good though.

Any last words for the fans?

Breathe some music into your soul to lighten the load.
