Interview: Carter Fox

Carter Fox is an incredibly intriguing proposition – not only is he a musician, but he’s also a producer and amateur astronomer. His track Space Island caught my attention recently, so I decided I wanted to find out more! Read on below to see how we got on.

By Jane Howkins

You recently released a track titled Space Island, which we reviewed. What can you tell us about the song?

This song was a really cool track that came together in the studio while we were filming a live version of our other collaboration Chopin Conchilto. Joe Kenney and I have been friends for a while and worked on different projects in the past and wanted to combine our two worlds. Space Island started out as a classical piece Joe sent over, I took a small section as a loop, added the chill drum groove you hear, and then on the spot recorded it as you see and hear in the video! Our good friend and talented guitarist Ethan Stauffer, who also provided guitar for the other collaboration, joined us and what was created was like when a start is born in the universe!

How has the reception been for Space Island and where can it be purchased?

It’s been all love and support with this release! My friends and family really enjoyed it, fans of jazz and chillhop and lo-fi really seem to dig it, too. And it’s just been getting out there in the universe in more ways than I hoped. It’s really awesome. It can be purchased on Apple Music, Amazon – all those good places music can be downloaded digitally.

The track features Ethan Stauffer. How did the collaboration come about and would you collaborate again?

Ethan went to college with Joe, and Joe went to college with my original drummer (from 16 years ago for my musical trio) Adam Sisko (and I’m pretty sure they were friends, too). So when things connect like that, there’s always an energy, a synergy that seems to work really well. We do plan to collaborate more and even play in a band together called the Proper Hustlers (including Joe!).

Do you plan to release any more singles in the near future?

I actually plan to release a new live version of my song Spring Wind on January 20th, 2023, to celebrate the new year and lunar new year. That can be presaved today here: https://ln…oftstudios

Are there any plans to release an EP or album?

Actually… yes. I will be releasing a brand new EP in June 2023 called Lost Signals From Outer Space. You see… I may or may not have been a radio telescope and caught some strange recordings from deep space and am going to release them… just keep an ear out for my new music! This is the story behind the new EP.

Has the pandemic hindered your work much?

The pandemic definitely hindered my live performance work. I spent numerous years as the bassist for r&b legend Freddie Jackson and when the pandemic happened, it really hit hard with tour dates cancelled for a year and a half. But what was interesting was during that time, my music really got some traction, and my song Eclipse started getting hundreds of thousands of streams on Spotify. Now it’s over 2,000,000 across platforms and it has helped me pursue my dream!

Your music contains elements of jazz and chillwave, sounding very unique. What/who influences you most as an artist? What have you been listening to recently?

Space, science, video games, positivity… those things really inspire me. I also just get inspired by the simplicity of a great singer/songwriter playing their acoustic guitar and singing in the corner of a coffee shop, an orchestra playing a symphony at the concert hall, hearing my friends play at their shows. Being with my friends and family, seeing good things and good places, eating good food. These all inspire my music. And honestly, the music I create has to be a culmination of all of that combining and reforming into it. I don’t know what else it could be! Lately I’ve really been enjoying chill music from artists like Yoste, Attom and Tepno! And major shoutout to my boy OddKidOut who is making some AMAZING music too!

You’re based in Philadelphia. What is the local music scene like?

It’s an amazing scene. Just as iconic as New York, Nashville or LA. The eclectic nature of the city is represented in it’s creative pallet. Kurt Vile and the War on Drugs, Armani White and Meek Mill, the Roots, Philly International Records (Soul Train!), the jazz scene, the rock scene, the punk scene, the electronic and ambient scene – everything’s here and there’s a lotta love.

Do you have any UK tour dates lined up?

I currently don’t, but if you’re out there would like to help me change that, tell your favorite club/venue to email me! I would love to perform in the UK!

Any last words for the fans?

Be good to each other and travel soulfully!
