Band Fantastic is the perfect name for Supertilt’s new EP, as it’s an amazing description of the group. They’re a post-metal instrumental duo, bringing their own unique brand of divergent sounds to their music. The nature of the band means that their sound won’t be for everyone, but those with more of an experimental taste should give this a whirl!

Platedrive is the first track, opening the EP up suitably with a killer guitar riff. The drums have an almost jazzy feel in the background, adding something a little different to the music. A lead guitar line peels off against the chugging rhythm guitars, creating an eerie intensity that makes you want to start banging your head straight away! The instrumental nature of the music means the focus is left purely on the sounds created by the band themselves, although some pre-recorded spoken vocals can be heard in the background.
Redrive is a little slower in pace, although those amazing drum beats are still present. They add an industrial quality to the music, seeing the guitars and bass following the percussion perfectly. Odd little guitar melodies break off occasionally, with the bass playing more of an active role here, seeping into the track in an amazing way.
The intriguing titled Garbotrash changes things up even further, having more of a staccato rhythm. The pace is matched once again by the guitars, showing just how tight this duo are when they’re working together! Odd whispers can be heard in the background on occasion, although they’re easy to miss! The track takes a mellower turn at times, before the riffs return to complete the piece.
Ambrosia Carbonara starts out with a downtuned guitar arpeggio, which increases in sound as the track continues. The volume is slowly raised up, also heightening the tension. The drums appear after a while, although they’re a lot mellower than on the previous tunes. The chugging riffs are added later on, although they’re less intense than before. It’s certainly an interesting piece of music!
1 Thing 2 Say 3 Words 4 You takes things in a completely different direction. The music sounds like something that would belong in a grunge/alt-rock song at first, with some melodic guitar melodies mixing well with the bass. The drums have an almost Latin flavour at times, with the programmed flute in the background marking a rapid change in sounds. It’s definitely one of the more intriguing pieces here!
Unlike You Imagined returns to the original proceedings of the first few tracks on the EP. The bass slinks through the music, adding a fantastic backbone to the piece. The synths are rather creative, implementing an expansive sound within the music. It’s got a wonderful textural quality, drawing the listener into Supertilt’s awesome world straight away.
Band Fantastic is certainly an interesting listen, seeing Supertilt mixing a number of different metal genres within their music. It won’t be for everyone, but those that choose to take the plunge should be rewarded!
