EP Review: Spirit Gun – The Antonym

Spirit Gun are a new discovery of mine, but they’re set to become firm favourites with the calibre of music contained on their EP, The Antonym. There’s a definitive punk quality to their music, although it also has elements of grunge, alt rock and garage rock contained within it, as well as a set of catchy hooks that will get under your skin in no time!

First up is the undeniably catchy 930. The fast rhythm and huge riffs combine together to make an utterly frantic sound. However, despite the track being fairly heavy, the vocals are incredibly melodic, with multiple vocal lines performing together to make some gorgeous harmonies. The lyrics are a little repetitive, but this just adds to the infectious nature of the tune. It breaks down into something a little slower towards the end.

Antonym opens with a cool bassline, before another fast drum beat makes an appearance. The vocals are added before the guitars kick in, building the tune up into a huge punk rock song. The raw nature of the production make it all seem very genuine – I can imagine Spirit Gun sounding fantastic in a live setting! Despite this, the chorus is another catchy banger, making me want to belt the lyrics out in style!

No Reverse uses some intriguing effects as the drums kick this song off, before a set of buzzsaw riffs are added to the music. The main chord sequence actually reminded me of the grunge genre a lot, despite the fast, punky nature of the tune. A set of gang style vocals are used at times, adding a nice change to the piece, keeping the listener on their toes throughout. The chorus lyrics are still rather repetitive here, aligning the music more with the Oi! genre. It’s a simple enough song, but one that truly works!

Shorty Red is the final track on the EP, closing it out nicely. The bass sounds suitably groovy underneath the opening guitar riffs, before the music descends into a much slower type of song. The main chord sequence used here sounds amazing, adding a really anthemic quality to the track. It’s a little different from the other pieces on offer here, but it’s actually my favourite track of the lot!

If you like your underground punk music, then Spirit Gun are for you! The Antonym is a little rough around the edges, but that’s no bad thing within this genre. It will be interesting to see how their music develops in the future!
