EP Review: Worldcub – BTTB Series 1

Worldcub is a Welsh band creating their own unique brand of quirky indie rock for the masses. The production quality on their new EP BTTB Series 1 sounds immense, with their music having a very unique vibe. Their sound won’t be for everyone, but those that give it a chance should enjoy the four tracks on this EP!

The EP kicks off with Look Through The Keyhole – it’s a dreamy indie rock song with a staccato beat. The drums align really well with the guitars and bass, making for a cataclysmic sound. The vocals take a while to appear, as the music builds up creating an eerie atmosphere. The vocals are quite quiet, sounding almost whispered in the background. Odd little guitar effects break off every so often, making you pay attention. It’s a great introductory track!

Torri starts out in a subtler fashion, with some pretty guitar melodies opening the tune, which have something of a flowing quality to them. The backing effects are faint but still add something special to the music, making Worldcub’s music sound completely otherworldly. The vocals are used in a harmonious way, interacting well with the rhythms created by the music itself. It changes into a faster, funkier tune about halfway through, keeping you on your toes throughout.

Nightingale opens with the sound of waves splashing against the shore, as a selection of synth and keyboard melodies layer around the effects. Despite still sounding fairly muffled, the vocals are a little more prominent here, until the main 80s style synth melody kicks in, seeming like something you might hear on Stranger Things. The track goes through several different dynamic changes as it progresses.

Time Slips Away so Suddenly seems like another slow burner, with the vocals having an almost sea shanty sound, due to the harmonic way they’re used. The synths and keyboard effects slowly build up with the percussion, until it turns into a fully fledged electro-pop tune. This is probably the most 80s sounding song on the EP, using what sounds like video game effects as it fades out at the end.

BTTB Series 1 certainly makes for an interesting listen, as it’s unlike anything else I’ve ever heard before. It’s really hard to categorise Worldcub’s music by genre – just give it a listen and see what you think!
