Rollercoaster is quite an interesting band, featuring two musicians from differing music scenes in France. Despite their differences, these artists have managed to create something really outstanding on their new EP Late At Night. It’s one for those into their electronic music, although it’s still rather divergent from the traditional EDM stuff you might hear on the radio.

Loneliness opens with an immense synth melody, also seeing some other synths bubbling away underneath the surface. It’s very new wave/post-punk at times, although the production quality sounds really modern. The vocals are deep and sultry, adding even more to the fantastic atmosphere the music creates. The tension builds up over the course of the song, running underneath your skin until it breaks down on the chorus, which uses a really beautiful chord sequence. It’s an amazing opener.
Title track Late At Night is very 80s, particularly in terms of the huge percussion and the synths played in the background, providing a nice rhythm section to the piece. The drums beats are expansive, adding a great texture to the piece. More and more synths are added as the chorus envelops the listener, drawing you in with all its anthemic glory. The vocals go a little higher here, showing a great overall range.
In The Shadow Of Time is catchy from the off, with the programmed drum beats creating a frantic, driving rhythm alongside the synth layers. Electric guitar solos are also added, adding a different texture to Rollercoaster’s usually electronic music. It’s an instrumental piece, but don’t let that put you off, as it does sound amazing throughout – the guitar solo at the end is really impressive to behold.
The Grid is another electro-rock banger, however it has more of a steady beat than some of the other tunes here. However, it’s still relatively positive sounding, and there’s so much going on here that you will need to listen to it a few times over to appreciate everything. The chorus will make you want to sing along instantly – just try listening to it and see how it makes you feel!
Crystal Eyes is the final song on the EP, going almost in full circle and taking things back to the haunting vibes of Loneliness. Layers and layers of synths play over each other, colliding in a fantastic way. The vocals take on a lower, almost whispered quality on the verses, drawing you in in an eerie way. It’s a good closing song and one of my favourites here!
Rollercoaster’s own brand of electronica/new wave is fantastic, showing a band doing something a little different from the norm. Late At Night is a banging EP and one I’ll definitely be playing on repeat!
