Interview: Maybe Human

Maybe Human is one of the most interesting projects you’ll hear all year, making rock music like nothing else. My first introduction to Maybe Human’s music was the song The Unknown, which is well worth checking out. If you like what you read here, you can find a full stream at the end of this interview!

You released a single titled The Unknown. What can you tell us about the track?

The Unknown is the second single from the Ape Law album. It features an epic soundbite from Charlton Heston and is kind of a Planet Caravan style muse.

How has the reception to The Unknown been so far, and where can the song be purchased?

The reception has been okay, there are some reviews of the track out there. Getting the album Ape Law to the right sci-fi crowd is key. Bandcamp is the best place to support artists. The 180g Vinyl is for sale. There is a Psychedelic Visualizer on YouTube that has gotten some views.

You also released another single recently titled Procession to the King. What can you tell us about that track?

Procession to the King is the first collaboration with the enigmatic artist Professor Electric. If you listen to the lyrics it’s wildly creative. The video is pretty cool too! Procession to the King can be found here.

Do you plan to release any more singles in the near future?

The second single feat. Professor Electric comes later this month and another crazy robo-metal track called The Atrocity of Modernity will be out later in March/April.

Do you plan to release an EP or an album anytime soon?

I’m really excited about completing my next album – Remains in Space. I’m going to deliver the conceptual album later this year along with a comic book drawn from a short story by John Elkin.

Your music has an alt rock/metal sound. What/who influences you most as an artist? What have you been listening to recently?

Way too many to list here, but my all time favorites are White Zombie, Tool, Primus, Soundgarden. Peter Gabriel is fast becoming an indirect influence as I know that he influenced everything I adore. People have mentioned Tool, Soundgarden and Peter Gabriel.

Lately I’ve been listening to my hometown favorite Hippie Death Cult from Portland, OR!! Amazing musicians and Eddie and Laura are a beautiful couple.

What do you think is the biggest challenge in the music business at the moment?

There is too much music in the world and thus it is free for corporations to profit as they will. Real touring bands are saying the cost of touring is so high it’s hard to break even. I only make music because I love it.

Where are you based? How is the music scene faring at the moment?

I live in Los Angeles and my studio is in Atwater Village. I’m part of the Hollywood Studio Lighting Local 728. The history of Hollywood is so much more than what it has become.  : (

Zebulon is a small eclectic joint in the neighborhood and they do a great job of keeping the local music scene interesting.

Do you have any tour dates lined up for the UK?

Maybe Human is not a touring band. At the moment I put everything together by myself. I would like to produce music for others that are more willing to tour.
