EP Review: Love Ghost – Tales of a Sad Boy

We’ve covered Glendale rockers Love Ghost quite a bit recently, reviewing their EP,  Venganza Del Fantasma, only a few weeks ago. They’ve already released another fantastic EP, Tales of a Sad Boy, and since I’ve been keeping track of Love Ghost’s recent work, I couldn’t help but give it a whirl! If you liked their last EP you’re sure to love this, as their music just keeps getting better and better!

By Jane Howkins

Starting things off nicely is Heartless, another genre-bending tune. The percussion sounds straight out of a hip-hop song, but the vocals and guitar lines have more of a typical pop-punk/emo vibe, melding different styles nicely together. The chorus is the real stand out moment here, as the chord progression used is extremely satisfying to listen to. You can really feel the emotion in the vocals on this bit too.

Lethargic opens slowly, with the sound of an old timey record playing against the main guitar melody. It’s quite minimalist at times, seeing the lead vocals sing over the main guitar melody for the first part of the track. There’s something rather grungy about the main note sequence used here, although it takes on a slightly more emo vibe towards the end. The backing vocals swirl in a gorgeous way as the song tails out.

Samurai has an eerie vibe from the get go, as a discordant piano melody creeps along in the background. The tension ramps up rather quickly, drawing you in straight away to the menacing world that Love Ghost has created here. The percussion is back, mixing well with some divergent guitar riffs as the vocals drawl over the music. The vocals take on a screaming tone on the chorus, amplifying things even further.

Train Tracks is the closing song, leaving you yearning for more long after Love Ghost has finished. It’s slightly mellower than the previous track, although it’s still suitably fitting. The track is fairly down-tempo until the chorus kicks in, elevating things higher and higher with a rousing chorus.

Love Ghost is one of the best bands on the scene at the moment, as Tales of a Sad Boy shows. They seem to be fairly prolific, so it’s only a matter of time before another fantastic EP is released!
