Interview: Dirty Mitts

Dirty Mitts is an awesome rock band with one particularly unique characteristic – their members are based in several different countries, including Poland, the UK and Egypt. Somehow they manage to tie it all together and make their own brand of classic rock and roll. Their debut release, My Show, is absolutely killer – if you’ve not checked it out yet, you can find a stream at the end of this interview with Tommy from the band.

You released a single titled My Show. What can you tell us about the track?

My Show was written in the dark ages of Covid’s first lockdown. Mo and I (the founding members of Dirty Mitts) were dreaming of a better time where we could gig to large audiences. This is when we decided to put pen to paper and make the dream a reality with a high energy opening song welcoming everybody to My Show. The lyrics from this song, ‘horses are running free’ and ‘light it up here we go’ are about freedom and enjoying the moment, which was desperately needed at the time. We wanted to create the feeling of breaking through the confinements we found ourselves in and entering a world of freedom and joy. We want everyone to be able to find this feeling, and what better way than a rock concert?

How has the reception to My Show been so far, and where can the song be purchased?

It’s our first release as a band and we were really wowed by the reception. We had 300+ radio plays and we couldn’t have been more chuffed!

You also released another single recently titled Ball and Chain. What can you tell us about that track?

Ball and Chain was written in an office in Baker Street, when Mo and I were hanging out after work. We wanted to pay homage to our favourite band The Rolling Stones. A rather optimistic thought crossed our minds – maybe we’d be caught in some scandalous lawsuit in which the Stones would secretly try to steal our song and pass it off as their own. The searing vocals and catchy tune mean the public would never suspect a thing, obviously…

Ball and Chain is about a toxic relationship. It’s passionate and addictive, but the blood pumping through the main character’s veins isn’t just desire, it’s poison too. Fire can be beautiful but it bloody hurts if you get too close!

Do you plan to release any more singles in the near future?

We have nine songs recorded, which we are planning on releasing as singles for now to get the maximum exposure for each song.

Do you plan to release an EP or an album anytime soon?

Maybe… we have nine songs recorded that we are releasing as singles in order to build an audience. We hope to add more to the mix by the end of the year so we can release an album.

Your music has a classic rock sound. What/who influences you most as an artist? What have you been listening to recently?

Between us we listen to pretty much everything! But it’s the 70s era we are most focused on as a band. It’s raw, in your face and based on old school blues.

What do you think is the biggest challenge in the music business at the moment?

For us it’s growing a fan base. We are at the beginning of our journey and we’re striving for packed out gigs.

The band features members from across the world. How does the writing and recording process work?

As a band we are very open to everyone being creative, so each song takes on its own journey. Sometimes we start with the lyrics, other times we start with the riff and sometimes we stumble across bits we like from our music jams. It’s great having so many styles and influences in one room, it opens the door to an array of different sounds.

Do you have any tour dates lined up for the UK?

We have gigs planned over the next few months and for the first time ever we are heading up north for a couple of shows, but as for a big tour, not yet!

Any last words for the fans?

Come and join us on this journey!
