EP Review: Georgia Hoareau – Wish Somebody Told Her

19 year old bedroom pop singer Georgia Hoareau hails from the Gold Coast in Australia. Despite her young age, she’s already very accomplished, showing a maturity within her music that is unrivalled in someone so young. Her lyrics have an authentic quality that works well when mixed with the warm melodies of her music, making her new EP, Wish Somebody Told Her, the perfect accompaniment to any day.

There are five tracks on Wish Somebody Told Her, with GIRL being the first track. I was reminded a little of the music created by Phoebe Bridgers, although the track is a little more upbeat than most of Phoebe’s stuff. It’s an indie pop song that is perfectly crafted, drawing you into Georgia’s world straight away. The chorus elevates things away from the quieter verses, as it has an irresistible hook that never sounds too mainstream pop.

In The End is a little more stripped-down, featuring a pretty piano melody playing underneath Georgia’s soft vocals are first. She really does have a stunning voice, full of soul and emotion here. More instrumentation is added over time, with occasional synth melodies breaking off at times, adding different layers to this pretty tune. The backing vocals are also used to accentuate the lead vocal line perfectly.

Oh Well is much more upbeat, sounding like a rock song when it first kicks off. A catchy guitar riff opens the tune with the rhythm section, before the first verse appears, slowing things down a little. The palm-muted guitars have a buzzsaw sound as they appear towards the end of the verse, before the chorus erupts once again. It’s one of my favourite tracks on this entire EP!

4 Minutes Away takes things back down to the bouncy indie pop sound that characterises Georgia’s sound so well. The vocals are particularly soulful here, showing just how fantastic this singer-songwriter’s range truly is. They’re lower on the verses, rising up higher and higher into an emotional plea on the choruses.

Not The Real You closes the EP out nicely. It’s a little different from the other songs here, opening with a melancholic piano melody played alongside Georgia’s vocals. The music underpins her voice perfectly, making the entire thing sound beautiful, particularly when the backing vocals kick in. More instrumentation is added as the song progresses, although it still remains fairly downbeat as a whole.

Georgia Hoareau is clearly an extremely talented person, as the songs on Wish Somebody Told Her show. She uses a number of different musical styles and genres within her work, showing she isn’t someone satisfied with making samey or boring music. Keep an ear out for Georgia’s music in the future!
