British artist Saam jk makes unique sounding indie pop songs that also have a hint of rock and dream-pop contained within them, making for a very interesting mix of sounds indeed! I’m always on the lookout for music that’s a bit different from the norm, so I couldn’t help but love his new four track EP, Hope For The Best, when I heard it. As previously stated, there are four tracks on Hope For The Best. The first song is I’m Back & I’m Okay, introducing the listener nicely into Saam jk’s world. The main melody doesn’t change too much throughout this tune, although there are lots of different elements added into the background to create more variety. Some synthlines follow the main guitar line, tailing off into their own motifs every so often. It’s very upbeat, having a nice, positive tone throughout.
Stacks is a little slower than the previous song, featuring a slowly strummed guitar that works well to create a rhythmic quality with the drums and bass. The electronic elements swirl away in the background in a lovely way, changing every so often. The chorus changes things slightly as the drums lighten up a little. It’s quite different from the previous song in terms of atmosphere, but it works well.
Roundabouts has a slightly 80s quality, with the synths reminding me a little of the video game soundtracks from that era. The bass is also really prominent, bubbling away against the upbeat drums and the jangly guitars. Saam jk’s vocals are a little higher here, showing a greater range to his interesting vocals. It’s certainly a unique piece of work, but it’s one that should get you tapping your feet along in no time!
Someone’s Sleeping uses a distorted effect on the vocals at first, adding in something new to Saam jk’s sound. It’s possibly the catchiest song on the entire EP, although that doesn’t mean it’s mainstream by any means! The drums and bass mix perfectly with the synths to create something that will get stuck in your head on the very first listen!
Saam jk’s music won’t be for everyone, but those who like their rock/pop a little different should get a kick out of Hope For The Best. It’s full of fresh ideas, showing just how imaginative this cool new artist is!
