EP Review: A.Wake – The Seed EP

I’m always on the lookout for music that’s a little different to the norm – particularly if it’s thought-provoking and shows an artist pushing musical boundaries. A.Wake is one such artist, unleashing her fantastic new EP, The Seed Root Chakra Remix EP, onto the world. It’s more of a world music record than anything else, seeing A.Wake introducing a fabulous array of Eastern tones into her music.

There are just four songs on The Seed Root Chakra Remix EP, making you long for more once it’s finished! First up is The Seed 23’s, starting things off nicely. It opens with an ethereal vocal melody, as a tribal-esque drum beat kicks in. An array of backing effects can be heard throughout as the song builds up, adding extra textures over time. It’s actually rather beautiful, suiting anyone who likes their music a little different from the norm.

The Seed Steal kicks off a little differently, this time featuring just a simple (yet gorgeous) piano melody at the start. However, a more electronic sounding drum beat soon arrives, followed by yet more mystical backing vocals. It’s got a slightly darker ambience than the previous piece, but it’s one that keeps your interest piqued throughout. A.Wake’s vocals are outstanding here, reaching some truly lofty heights at times!

The Seed LEen actually sounds like something that would belong in an EDM club at the start, marking a distinct change in the EP. The bass throbs along in a lovely manner against the fast beat, as more and more synth layers are added over time, creating something that sounds really wonderful. The vocals are a little distant in the mix here, but this allows the music to stand out, keeping your interest piqued throughout.

The last track on the EP is actually a radio edit of the previous song. As such, it’s a little shorter (the original is just under eight minutes whereas the edit is a shade over four minutes). However, A.Wake has managed to condense it all down into a still beautiful track, and one perhaps a bit more suited to the mainstream. However, it’s still a worthy listen.

All in all, The Seed Root Chakra Remix EP shows that A.Wake is an artist pushing the boundaries, not afraid to do something new. Give it a chance and you might find yourself loving it!
