Sent From Above is quite a unique proposition. It’s a musical project created by Sam from the band The Curious, in which he remixes their songs. I had the chance to check out his remix of the song, Take Me By Suprise, and I felt it was worth sharing with the world. If you somehow missed out, you can find a full stream at the end of this interview.
By Jane Howkins
What can you tell us about the track?
The track is a remix of my band’s song Take Me By Suprise. I just started messing around with the vocal to see what other genres I could make it work in, and landed in the dance world. Also to put our music in front of audiences who might not necessarily listen to band music
How has the reception to the song been so far, and where can the song be purchased?
Some people say they prefer it to the original, which just goes to show that everyone’s different!
How did the remix of the original version come about? Is this something you plan on doing more of in the future?
The original actually came about before Covid, probably sometime in 2019. We then recorded it bit-by-bit remotely during the lockdowns of 2020, and finalised it over the internet which was different to how our previous releases were put together; writing together in a room, going to the studio to record, then sending it the track of for mixing and mastering.
Do you plan to release more singles over the coming months?
Throughout the month of May, I released one song a week which eventually came together to form an EP, called From Noothing. This was made up of songs that I’d been working on since 2021, in which I was experimenting with guitars and electronic music (two of my favourite things) and trying to make something work and sound coherent!
Are there any plans to release an EP or album of remixes?
Maybe in the future. My remixes started off as just a bit of fun, and trying to see where I could take my band’s music in terms of other genres. We’re (The Curious) actually releasing a lot of new music this year, so who knows, I might dive into messing around with some of those songs in other styles, but if it happens, it happens.
The track has quite an obvious EDM sound. What/who influences you most as an artist? What have you been listening to recently?
I’d been listening to a lot of Skrillex’s new music that he’d been releasing at the start of the year (think tracks like Leave Me Like This, Rumble) and was just really excited by some of the sound design and direction he was taking his music in. I think he’s one of the greats for merging genres and really being creative with simple sounds. Aside from that, I’ve also been really into Night Drive Phonk.
Do you have anything else exciting coming up this year?
I’m probably going to line up some shows with my band The Curious throughout the summer, as we’ve been wanting to play all the new music we’ve been sitting on for a while now.
Where are you based? How is the local music scene faring at the moment where you are?
I’m from London! The music scene here is quite varied which is good, but I’m not one to really go to a lot of shows unless i’m really into the band or artist.
Do you have any tour dates lined up for the UK?
For the above project – no. I’ve got ideas in my head of how I’d set it up for a live setting, but at the moment my focus is just on The Curious.
