EP Review: Astrels – Metropolis Psychosis EP

We recently carried out an interview with Astrels, who describe their music as being ‘electronic soundtrack pop futurism’. I found myself suitably intrigued, and decided to give their new EP, Metropolis Psychosis EP, a whirl. I was not disappointed – it’s a great record, perfect for those into their new wave, electronica and post-punk.

The record kicks off in style with Neon Messiah. It’s a killer first track, drawing the listener in straight away. Astrels have managed to perfectly mix together modern electronica and an old school new wave sound here, making for something incredibly catchy. The synths and bass pulsate along in lovely style with the beat, as the strong vocals croon their way through the music. Try and listen to this without it getting stuck in your head!

Neon Messiah Rteph88 Remix is, as you might have guessed, a remix of the previous song. What’s quite interesting is that it sees the band turning the tune on its head, becoming more of a modern EDM tune. The drums are really impressive here, with some lovely house-style piano chords thrown into the mix. It’s actually remarkably different from the original song, but there’s enough here to appease current fans.

Starship Motherchild sees Astrels going in yet another direction. It’s still a synth-pop tune, but it’s got a slight indie rock edge. The synths have a really cool sound, bubbling through the tune, tailing off in different directions. Astrels incorporate a bit of funk into the mix, ensuring this is one song that will get stuck in your head for hours to come! The vocals rise up higher on the chorus, displaying an impressive vocal range.

Starship Motherchild (Extended Spacedust Remix) is a remix of the previous song, again, turning it into a more modern sounding track. Whilst the main drum beat is fairly typical of the EDM genre, some tribal-esque drums kick in on occasion, as the bass and synths drift around in the background in lovely style. It’s infectious, making this one of my favourite tunes on the entire record.

Metropolis Psychosis EP is an amazing EP, showing Astrels to be a talented act and one not to be missed for fans of electronic music. It’s gloriously inventive, going through several different electronic sub-genres. Check it out below!
