By Jane Howkins
You recently released a single titled Tongue-Tied. What can you tell us about the track?
The song is really a testament to the universal human desire for love and connection, regardless of age, race, gender or sexual orientation. It was important for me and the other songwriters, with the current climate we are in, to write a song about this.
How has the reception to the song been so far, and where can the song be purchased?
The reception we have received has been amazing! So positive and loving. People have really connected to the song. You can buy or stream the song through Apple Music, Spotify and most streaming platforms.
Do you plan to release any more singles in the near future?
I think so. My writing and music partner Lazaro Rodriguez and I are planning to take some time to just do a lot of writing and co-writing with other artists and songwriters. Maybe we will do something next year.
Are there any plans to release an album or EP anytime soon?
No plans at the moment, but you never know what the future holds!
What is the writing and recording process like for you?
The writing process is like having a really good conversation with a friend. It starts with an idea and we usually write the lyrics first, then find all the melodies as we go. The recording process can be a bit more tedious, but it can also be a lot of fun.
Your music has a dance pop sound. What/who influences you most as an artist? What have you been listening to recently?
To be honest I am influenced by all kinds of music. It ranges from Billy Holiday, Ani DiFranco, Jenny Lewis, Miles Davis, Frente, to Guns N’ Roses, Led Zeppelin, Bee Gees, Beatles and bands like Nine Inch Nails, Garbage and Metallica. Some songs on my playlist currently are Spacehog’s In the Meantime, Wagon Wheel by Old Crow Medicine Show, Karol G, Selena Gomez, The Kinks, Lizzo. So you get the idea. I have a very large spectrum of music I listen to.
You’re based in Nashville. What is the local music scene like at the moment?
The scene out her is quite eclectic. You can see all kinds of music here. You mostly hear about all the country music, but you would be amazed at how many different kinds of artists/bands and songwriters there are in Nashville. I actually made a documentary about the scene out here a few years back called A Nashville State of Mind. The film captured a small part of that scene that my band and I encountered when we first moved to Nashville. Some really incredible musicians.
Do you have anything else exciting coming up this year?
Just a whole lot of songwriting. I’m really looking forward to working with other songwriters and creating some amazing music.
Do you have any tour dates lined up for the UK?
Unfortunately not at the moment but again, you never know what the future brings.
Any last words for the fans?
I love making fun, positive and meaningful music. I am grateful for all the fans that support that – just know you are greatly appreciated. Thank you!!!
