EP Review: My Life Story – I’m A God

Epic pop pioneers My Life Story released a real blinder of an EP at the end of August this year, titled I’m A God. The band have a new album coming out next year, so I’m A God is a lovely little snippet of what’s to come. However, it’s clear here that My Life Story are on their way to greatness, and I can’t believe I haven’t discovered them sooner! It’s certainly a pop record, but the tracks here are very different to what you might normally expect from the mainstream, which is definitely a good thing!

Kicking things off nicely is opener and title track I’m A God. It’s a synth-laden tune, featuring some gorgeous bubbling synth melodies that carry throughout the majority of the tune, creating a lovely backbone. The verses are a little mellower than the other sections of the track, allowing vocalist Jake Shillingford’s vocals to shine through. His voice is quite unique, reminding me a little of the post-punk movement from the 80s, making for a fantastic mix of sounds. I’m A God is also extremely catchy, working its way into your brain on the first listen.

Numb Numb Numb has a slightly different vibe, this time opening with a fast, palm-muted guitar riff that nevertheless sounds amazing. Jake’s vocals follow the guitar lines perfectly, as a slew of gorgeous backing vocals float around in the background, adding another cool layer to this tune. The pace soon kicks up as the full band joins in, creating a great deal of energy. Jake’s vocals reach some lofty heights, showing a fantastic vocal range.

The intriguingly titled Tits & Attitude is up next, closing the EP out nicely. Again, it’s quite a different sounding tune from the two that came before, as it’s much slower, having a stripped-down quality. The subtle nature of the track really works though, creating a suitable atmosphere for the piece. The chorus elevates things a little, creating a nice change of pace. All in all, a lovely track to behold!

It’s great to hear a modern band doing something so different, especially in the world of pop. I’m A God is a really creative record, showing great promise for My Life Story’s future. If that sounds good, make sure you give the EP a whirl below!
