Interview: Lucy Crisp

Lucy Crisp is a British singer-songwriter from Nottingham, an area we don’t get to hear that much music from. Check out a full stream of the song at the bottom if you missed our review first time round!

You recently released a new song, titled Locked Down. What can you tell us about the track?

Locked Down is a song about my experience of the covid-19 lockdown as someone disabled. I wrote it at a time where I felt vulnerable, but also angry of how many people like myself was treated. Everyone’s lockdown experience was different for sure, but I think we can all agree how lovely the freedom felt at times where you could just go anywhere without having to abide by the rules.

How has the reception to Locked Down been so far, and where can the track be purchased?

Everyone is loving the song right now – BBC Introducing East Midlands made it their track of the week in Nottingham and Derby back in October and that was so unexpected! It’s always a good song to play at any show too and it’s definitely one that gets the crowd going. If you want to give it a listen, you can buy it on iTunes or you can find it on all streaming platforms.

The track is taken from your debut EP, 65 Roses. What can you tell us about the record?

65 Roses is a record that allows the world to see the real me and what I go through on a day to day basis. The record title is a play on words for the genetic condition, Cystic Fibrosis, and 65 roses was a way that I learnt how to say Cystic Fibrosis. I’ve always wanted to name my first EP 65 Roses but all the songs have meaning and are very personal. The songs on the EP range from themes of loss, isolation, and happiness, but there’s definitely a sprinkle of hope in some of those songs.

Do you plan to release any more singles in the near future?

I’ve been working on a few cool songs recently. One song is inspired by a Coldplay album title and it has a true meaning of friendship to it. I’d love to release it soon!

Are there any plans to release a full length album soon?

At the moment, it’s not in the works. It would be cool to do that one day when the world knows my name.

Locked Down has an 80s synth-pop sound. What/who are you most influenced by? What have you been listening to recently?

I think a lot of 80’s synth pop songs inspired me to write the song, especially bands like a-ha and Eurythmics. A lot of music right now seems to be reverting back to either that era or the 90’s, which I find very cool. I guess we all love travelling back in time with music.

Where are you based? What is the local music scene like in your area?

I’m part of the Nottingham music scene and every musician I’ve met is very friendly. We all support each other and I think that’s really important when you’re all trying to do your thing. There’s always something going off.

Do you have anything else exciting coming up this year?

I don’t as of yet but I do have a very exciting announcement coming on the first week of January and it involves a certain DJ.

Any last words for the fans?

Thank you so much to all of you for supporting me this year with my music. It really does mean the world for people to support a small artist and I definitely don’t take you for granted. This is not the last you’ll hear of me but best wishes for 2024 and I cannot wait to tell you the news in the new year. Yours truly, Lucy x
