Rebel Kicks are a duo who have just come to my attention thanks to the release of their new EP. A five-track collection that fully displays their range and versatility, it’s called somewhere.in.between.
By Graeme Smith
Rebel Kicks are brothers Anthony and Steven Babino. Musicians from a young age, they played and sang with their professional jazz musician father before launching a career that’s seen them feature on MTV and Showtime, as well as sharing bills with Foo Fighters, Blink-182 and Incubus.
Their new EP kicks off with single The Girl From Barcelona. It’s easy to see why the band chose the track to showcase their work as it is immediately engaging. A soft groove sets the early pace before smooth, compelling vocals come in. The track was inspired by a trip to Spain and you certainly get taken there thanks to its laidback yet passionate vibe. It’s a strong start.
Past Life follows with a story of human connection. It’s an emotional track, opening pensive and textured before settling into a dreamy arrangement. Its chorus ponders on the existence of soulmates, inspired by the red thread of fate theory, and is delivered through soaring, charismatic vocals. It’s a highlight.
Flowering Dogwood takes thing in a folksy direction with an acoustic guitar riff and plenty of natural imagery in its lyrics. Feel Good then gives us some jazz and soul. A sway-inducing groove tempers its introspective story. Save It For A Rainy Day closes the album with a cautionary tale that has a big and memorable chorus. There’s a timeless feel to it that makes it another highlight.
Rebel Kicks are a highly-polished act who inject their music with soul and humanity. If you’re coming to them new like us, then this EP is the perfect starting point. Its range keeps things interesting, while staying pleasingly coherent.
