Vancouver project The Silence Industry began in 2007, created by Graham Jackson. Over the years, Graham has collaborated with a selection of other musicians in his quest to create alternative rock with a raw, DIY sound, and he’s been largely successful in that. As The Walls Close In is a new three track EP, showcasing The Silence Industry’s amazing talent. Why not give it a go if you like what you read here?

The EP starts out nicely with the title track, As The Walls Close In. It’s got quite a cool intro, seeing a killer guitar lick open the track up, alongside a thrashing rhythm section. The intro ends as the deep vocals kick in – they’re rather unique sounding, but they work really well with the style of music curated here. It’s a pretty dark track, but there’s a lot to love here, seeing Graham inject more than a hint of post-punk into the tune.
Rags of Clay (Lofi Piano Version) presents something slightly divergent from As The Walls Close In. As you might have guessed from the title, it’s a stripped-down piano track, seeing Graham going in a completely different direction. The piano has a slightly muffled sound, but it only makes it seem more atmospheric, suiting the style The Silence Industry is going for here. It’s great to hear a rock act trying something a little different!
These Long Sunset Shadows (A Dark Ambient Noise Jam) is the closing track on the EP. It’s also the most unique song here, taking The Silence Industry’s music in a post-rock direction. It won’t be for everyone, but it’s a really interesting piece of work, showing the huge power of Graham’s imagination. The track is pretty long, including some intriguing sound effects that add quite an eerie feel to the record, before tailing out nicely at the end.
Every song on As The Walls Close In is remarkably different from the last, showing an artist not afraid to push boundaries. If you like your music on the more experimental spectrum, The Silence Industry is for you!
