EP Review: Harrison Brome – Stars At Midnight

Harrison Brome is a Vancouver, Canada-based singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer who has just come to my attention thanks to the release of his latest EP. An immersive, five-track collection of pop, alternative, indie, R&B and electronica, it’s called Stars At Midnight.

By Graeme Smith

I feel a little late the party with Harrison. He’s been releasing music since 2016, building a lot of buzz on Spotify and catching the attention of some of the web’s biggest tastemakers. Better late than never, I suppose, and Stars At Midnight is a fantastic introduction to his eclectic sound.

The EP opens with Close To Me. It’s a brooding, slow-burning start which gets us right into the emotional thick of it. Harrison’s soulful vocals are instantly a stand out. They’re captivating in the verse and somehow straddles the line between passionate and laidback in the chorus. Licks of electronica and echoing guitar keep the instrumental arrangement interesting as things progress. It’s a great opener.

Title track Stars at Midnight comes with a steady groove and some funky bass. There’s a touch of the throwback about it, while keeping things fresh. Don’t Want to Say Goodbye take things in an unexpectedly acoustic country direction during a melancholic moment. In the Dark is richly atmospheric and textured. It showcases Harrison’s sound at its most experimental.

Previously unreleased track Forget About Us closes the EP and Harrison certainly saves the best for last. It has a soft and insatiable groove, and his vocals are at their most seductive and charismatic. It’s impossible not to nod along to its rhythm, and it finishes big and cathartic. It’s a definite highlight.

If you’re new to Harrison’s music like I am, then you’re in for a treat with Stars at Midnight. If you’re one of those that have already discovered him, this EP is a lovely extension of his genre-mashing discography. The EP is out now via Nettwerk Music Group and you can check it out below.
