EP Review: Cris Cap – Howlin’ At The Moon

German artist Cris Cap is a songwriter and pianist, combining several different genres together in his music. You’ll find a mixture of soul, pop, r&b, country and rock within his latest EP, Howlin’ At The Moon, expertly blending genre lines in a fantastic way. It’s a pretty short record, with only three tracks to be found here. However, the music is so good that it will keep you coming back for more, long into the future!

By Jane Howkins

Kicking things off nicely is the title track, Howlin’ At The Moon. It’s a fantastic opener, showing just how skilled Cris is at songwriting. The track has quite an old school feel, harking back to the glory days of the country rock movement, sounding like something straight out of the 70s. The piano and guitars match the rhythm section well, making for something rather catchy, as Cris croons perfectly over the top.

Angel In My Room lends itself more to the soul/classic r&b genres, with even a hint of Motown thrown in for good measure. It’s great to hear an artist that is able to mix so many genres together with ease, and Angel In My Room is a prime example of this. It’s really funky, with a pulsating bassline and some subtle horns playing in the background, creating a tune that will have you dancing along in no time.

Show My Love is the final song on the EP, also featuring Tyla Rae on vocals. It’s another old school r&b/soul track – the organ is particularly cool, adding an awesome sound to the atmosphere of the piece. It’s fairly upbeat, seeing Tyla take over the lead vocals for the song, as Cris performs the main instrumentation. There’s also a lovely saxophone solo towards the end, so make sure you listen to the entirety of the track!

Cris Cap is a talented artist, with Howlin’ At The Moon showing he isn’t afraid to blur the genre lines. It will be interesting to see what he comes up with next time around!
