Interview: Alan Mair

Alan Mair is an artist who has performed in a slew of bands over the years. He’s now embarking on a solo career with his 80s-influenced tune If I Gave the World a Turn, and I predict a lot of good things for Alan in the years to come! If you liked our review of the song, why not find out more about it below?!

By Jane Howkins

You recently released a new track called If I Gave the World a Turn. What can you tell us about the song?

I wrote the chorus of the song a while back and then towards the end of 2023, I looked at the song again and had a creative surge to write the verses and middle eight – finally the song was finished. I have a recording studio at home and started the recording process last year – I finished the track at the end of January this year.

How has the reception to the track been so far, and where can it be purchased?

It has been by far the best reaction I have ever had with any recording I have released. I have never had so many rave reviews for a single.

Do you have any more singles planned for the near future?

Yes, my next single is nearly finished and it’s called Skint My Knees On a Supernova.

Are there any plans to release a full length album or EP anytime soon?

Yes I’m putting together my album now and it will be released in around 4 months time.

You’ve performed at some big festivals, including Glastonbury. What was that like? Do you have any festivals lined up for this year?

We, that being The Only Ones, played Glastonbury in the 70s when it was a pretty wild experience, as there was an element of lawlessness with people coming over fences and fences being torn down. Hence it felt pretty wild and exciting with crowds going wild. And we played the Wireless O2 festival in 2007 in Hyde Park and the reception was brilliant. We have no festivals planned so far for this year.

Your music has a rock-pop sound. What/who are you most influenced by? What have you been listening to recently?

I still love the rock bands from the 60’s and 70’s like The Who, the Kinks and Led Zeppelin. The recent bands I like are Muse, Rival Sons, Kings of Leon and Blackberry Smoke.

Were are you based? What is the local music scene like?

I live in Camden Town in London, so I love that I am right in the middle of the Camden rock scene with places like Kokos, the Dublin Castle, the Underworld and many more.

Do you have anything else exciting coming up over the next few months?

I am always most excited about writing music and recording, so that’s what I will be drenched in for the next few months finishing the album.

Do you have any tour dates lined up for the UK?

There are no tour dates lined up just now, but we are currently talking to different promoters.

Any last words for the fans?

Thank you for all the support for my own music and for supporting The Only Ones for all these years, as the concerts we did last year were awesome.
