Discovery: Willie J The Philosopher

Willie J The Philosopher is a name that should be on everyone’s lips. Not only is he a world-class actor and consummate entertainer, but he’s also a singer-songwriter, specialising in a soulful form of r&b music. His style has a retro sound of sorts, but there’s still plenty here for modern music aficionados to enjoy.

Our introduction to Willie J The Philosopher’s music is with I’m Coming to Get Ya. It’s groovy from the very start – despite the seemingly sparse instrumentation, everything all works rather well together, creating a relaxing tune perfect for chilling to after a hard day at work. The main instrumentation comes from an old school sounding piano, with a tight rhythm section also introduced into the piece. Willie’s vocals drift between rapping and singing, reaching some cool heights here.

Our next track is titled So Fine. It’s a little more minimalist than I’m Coming to Get Ya at first, featuring just some simple piano chords to kick the tune off, underpinning Willie’s vocals nicely. However, the drums and bass soon kick in – they’re prominent, yet they never take over the track, allowing the piano and vocals to really shine through here. There’s also what sounds like a xylophone added in every so often, mixing things up nicely.
