Interview: Wotts

If you like your indie pop or power pop, then you really ought to give Wotts a listen! The Canadian duo have a fantastic sound, reminding me of a lot of the pop that came to prominence in the 60s. Their track there is a good example of their sound – find out more about the track in our interview!

You recently released a new single titled there. What can you tell us about the song?

We’ve always had an appreciation for ballads but never had the courage to actually make one. I don’t know what changed, but we did go through a phase a few months ago where we listened to nothing but Beatles and Elton John records, so I’m pretty sure that gave us the nudge. It’s easily our most stripped back and chill song to date, and definitely inspired by piano ballads from back in the day. A bit of a departure from our usual sound, but we’re always down to try something new.

How has the reception to there been so far, and where can it be purchased?

Surprisingly good! That might sound weird or insecure to say, but we sometimes put pressure on ourselves to drop ‘bangers’, or tracks that have a lot of ‘stuff’ in it. So if anything, it’s been a cool reminder that there’s room for all kinds of vibes. If you’re reading this and want to check it out, you can find it at the usual streaming and download spots!

Do you have any more singles planned for release soon?

Happy to say we got more on the way, including something new in May. Whoa that rhymed, looks like we dropped two songs this month.

A new EP titled PETALS was also released in recent months. What can you tell us about the record?

PETALS was such a fun one to make. We fully embraced our psych pop influences and just went to town on it without any inhibitions. It’s also cool because it isn’t just a random collection of songs, it tells a story. The whole thing is about falling in love with someone that doesn’t feel the same way, so if you like happy sounding sad songs, it might be your jam.

Do you have any plans to release a full-length album in the near future?

This is the first time we’re saying it, but we started working on our first ever full-length last month. Super excited, in fact, we’ve never been more excited about a project before.

Your music has a classic power-pop sound. What/who are you most influenced by? What have you been listening to recently?

We have a wide range of influence from tons of different genres. Aussie psych pop (Tame Impala and Pond) has been the main one since the start, but lately we’ve started to embrace Britpop. But all in all, we like to keep things fresh for ourselves, not sticking to one specific sound and playing with new ideas. A lot of indie-pop, rock, hip-hop, and 90s music has been on the dial lately. Special shout out to Fontaines D.C., we’ve been listening to them way too much lately.

You’re from Ottawa. What is the local music scene like in your area at the moment?

The scene is always growing here! Lately a lot of the bands have been building a solid network amongst themselves. Anytime you go to a local show you can typically find people there from a dozen or so other bands, everyone is very supportive of each other.

Do you have anything else exciting coming up over the next few months?

So much. We’ve got new music cooking, including our first full-length and we’re going all in on music videos, so y’all better stay tuned!

Do you have any tour dates lined up for the UK?

Nothing planned but that would be a dream for us. Someday!

Any last words for the fans?

Just want to send a huge thank you to everyone for the support and love they’ve shown us. It’s so incredible that we have people streaming our tunes from all over the world – we can’t wait to make more for you.
