A semi-immersive experience, The Unspoken welcomes the audience into the Solitary West, a speakeasy at the heart of prohibition-era New York. Within its walls, we follow a lowly waiter, as he recounts his tumultuous rise to the top of the criminal underworld through the scheming, ambitious influence of his wife, Carmen. The Unspoken is the upcoming debut production of The Dark Slate Theatre Company.
The Show
On the day the Solitary West is to be burnt down, the Waiter finds himself held at gunpoint. With the promise of an explanation, and in the hopes of attaining forgiveness from the elusive gunman, he takes us on a journey back in time, spanning the last few months of the 1920s, and documents his rise from lowly bartender to one of the heads of the bootlegging trade. When his past comes back to haunt him, and the web of lies starts to collapse, his treacherous ambition starts to push him to further and further lengths in a pitiful scramble to survive.Through the Waiter, and the shadowy world that surrounds him, the production explores prohibition-era America, and the rapid changes incurred as the Great Depression looms. The play’s strong themes of grief, ambition, and the relentless but fruitless pursuit of the American Dream make The Unspoken a show not to miss.
The Dark Slate Theatre Company
Founded by a group of current and ex-York University Students, and taking influence from film noir, German expressionism, and immersive theatre, The Dark Slate Theatre Company aims to tell compelling stories of the macabre, with a keen focus on design and world-building. With experience in both amateur and professional theatre, they cannot wait to bring their debut show to the wider York community.“The Unspoken is a play that we are all deeply passionate about, with many of us having worked on an earlier production of it with the University of York Drama Society. With its origins as an A-Level coursework piece, it’s incredibly exciting to have the chance to bring it to life on a much larger scale, after a now-almost four-year development process.”– Thomas McCarthyCreative Director, The Dark Slate Theatre Company
