In Greek mythology, Atlas cut a solitary figure maintaining the celestial vault on his burdened shoulders, but that’s not why Timothy has used the name in the title of his new EP. Instead, across four tracks, the record contemplates balance, wisdom, and collective human experience. Thematically, it’s a departure from what we heard with Goldschatz, which spoke of road trips and van life.

Musically, it’s different too. Rather than straight Americana or folk, there’s something more universal about the sound of Man Atlas, at times feeling like soft rock, and at others jazzy or ambient. Liminal is a beautiful case in point, starting things off with a relentless guitar melody and cinematic undercurrents. Timothy’s vocals shine through it all, delivering lyrics that speak of finding joy in uncertainty.

Rebound brings with it some soft introspection, and tells a story of getting out your own way when it comes to love and happiness. Off The Grid brightens things with a questioning, acoustic moment before Summer’s End closes the record by stripping everything back. It beautifully soundtracks these late summer days with a captivating ambience and lyrics that are full of imagery.

Though only four tracks, Timothy’s new EP shows a spectacular range, both in terms of storytelling and composition. Not a note is wasted, and it’s all held together nicely by his soothing vocals. It’s the perfect collection to get lost in, at least for a little while.

Man Atlas was recorded live to tape with the help of Giuliano Sulzberger, giving it an immediate and authentic sound. The EP is out now via Vissen Records and you can give it a listen below.
