Singer-songwriter John Doherty has been slowly building up his profile in the music industry, handcrafting gorgeous pieces of folk and country, with more than a hint of the blues thrown in too! His song The Tide really caught my attention – it’s well-written and sleekly produced, seeing John sing at the top of his lungs over the gorgeous array of guitar melodies, grabbing you right by the soul. You recently released a new single titled The Tide. What can you tell us about the song?
For me, The Tide marks a step in a new direction for my music. Sonically, I’m exploring a more country, roots and blues sound. That’s the kind of music I grew up listening to and have found myself always falling back into. The song itself actually reflects this. It’s about my life and career up to this point. I’ve been all over the world with my music and worked with amazing people, but I’ve always chased different definitions of what I thought success was. I feel now though that I’ve come back to my roots and I’m enjoying writing more than ever.
How has the reception to The Tide been so far?
It’s been really good so far. It feels different to other releases. It feels more honest and authentically me, so I think it’s resonating with people more.
Do you have any more singles planned for release soon?
I do indeed. This year I challenged myself to write 100 songs within the calendar year. I’ve been writing with and for a bunch of amazing artists and writers and I’m on track to hit my goal. Most of these songs are for other artists but there are definitely some John Doherty songs in there that I’ve started recording.
Are there any plans to release an album or EP anytime soon?
Yes, as I said I’m recording at the moment and working out the best tracks to release. Whether they come out as an EP, album or just as singles I still haven’t decided but there is certainly a lot of music coming!
The holiday season has just passed. Did you do anything special for the period?
I absolutely love Christmas. I try to keep it as free as I can though so I can spend time at home in Donegal with my family.
You’re based in Donegal. What is the local music scene like in the area?
I think that Donegal is a hidden gem when it comes to music. Some of the best musicians I’ve ever played with are from here. You can find a bit of everything from traditional Irish to all kinds of original artists.
What/who were you most influenced by when writing the track? What have you been listening to recently?
The two artists I’d been most influenced by when writing this song were Chris Stapleton and Paul Brady. They’ve been two of my most listened to artists over the past few years for sure along with Jason Isbell, Ray Lamontagne and my all time favourite band, Thin Lizzy.
Do you have anything else exciting coming up over the next few months?
I’m currently securing some dates for a tour early next year and working on my next releases.
Do you have any tour dates lined up for the UK?
Nothing confirmed just at the moment, but I’ve played all over the UK in the past and would love to come back soon.
Any last words for the fans?
Come over and check out what I’m up to on Instagram or whatever socials you use. I’m usually out and about making videos and singing in the absolutely stunning landscapes of Donegal on the west coast of Ireland. If you’re already a fan, thank you for listening to my music. It’s a special feeling to know that something I’ve written, recorded and put my heart into is being listened to.
