Heralded by the coiling blue snake on its artwork, you get a sense of whimsy with an aggressive undercurrent from the EP. They’re two of the hallmarks of emotional punk with, of course, the emotion. Otto Speake’s new EP has all three.
The sound is typified by EP opener DERANGED which trades soft, introspective verses with a quickfire chorus that’s full of heartache. The two Wills make a lot of noise for a duo. DEJA VU follows, punching up through the gears through a lively, catchy number that becomes relatable through its confessional lyrics.
WASTED YOUTH slows things a little with a chugging arrangement and a sense of nihilism. UP FROM HERE is perhaps the purest pop-punk moment of the record, giving us an anthemic, head-banging chorus. ALONE closes the EP in slow-burning style which explodes in the chorus.
Otto Speake have a sound that might have been lost to history but feels more relevant than ever. The powerful anthems on display across the five tracks of their new EP are infectious and full of depth. I’m impressed, and look forward to hearing more from them.
