Monk is the latest track from Austin, USA-based alternative rock outfit The Dialtones, and it’s an experimental wonder.

Opening with edgy riffs and overlapping vocals, there’s instantly a sense of the different about Monk. The cacophony builds before pouring out into a psychedelic odyssey which combines the rawness of rock with something altogether more cosmic. It’s almost impossible to find anything that it compares to, such is its unique approach. Lyrically, it dwells on Joseph Campbell and Carl Jung, and how basic human nature becomes at odds with modern life.
The Dialtones are a project led by songwriter Lauren Gurgiolo who battles with bipolar 1 disorder. Prone to manic episodes, she’s abandoned loved ones following hallucinations and the strange narratives of the sci-fi she loves. Her new EP, on which Monk will appear, is set to explore this relapse. Set for release 11 April 2025, it’s called Static Sky.
Joining Lauren on the EP are Mad Whittaker on vocals, Geena Spigarelli and Brian Beatie on bass, Chris Housler and Josh Halpern on drums, Wiley Green on synths, Paco Proano on sound design, and Karla Manzur on harmony vocals. It was mixed by Brian Beatie, mastered by The Kitchen Mastering, and part-funded by the City of Austin Cultural Arts Division.
