Chris Blackwood returns with nostalgic indie rock single

Recently, Knaresborough-based singer songwriter Chris Blackwood returned to our blog after having not previously appeared on our pages since 2017. At the beginning of March, we caught up with him, talking about his single Tantalus.

By Graeme Smith

Daytime TV is the follow up to Tantalus, both being taken from Chris’s upcoming third album, Tantalus Unbound. Collectively, the album explores the idea of “breaking free from self-imposed limitations,” as Chris explains it. The story draws on Greek mythology, specifically the story of Tantalus, a figure who stands in a pool of water with fruit hanging above, just out of reach.

His new track perfectly invokes the concept, painting a picture of a wasted day through bold yet melancholic indie rock. Despite the languidness of the lyrical story, there’s an uplifting feel to its instrumental, especially as things build to a crescendo in the chorus. There’s also a nostalgia about it all. The track would work just as nicely in the ’90s Britpop heyday as it does in the 2020s.

Tantalus Unbound is set for release 18 April 2025 with Chris celebrating its release in a live performance at Headrow House in Leeds the same evening. Tickets are available here.

Daytime TV is out now and you can give it a listen below.
