Discovery: MavAngelo reflects on the holiday season

MavAngelo is a John Mayer and Jimi Hendrix-inspired artist who has just hit my radar.

By Graeme Smith

As well as those popular artists, he’s drawn influence from Korean and Japanese city vibes for his latest single, FadingSkies.

A reflective piece, the track explores themes of nostalgia, melancholy, and the innocence of childhood related to the holiday season. It creates a dreamy soundscape introduced by some gentle, melancholic percussion and licks of guitar before finding a laidback stride.

An image-laden first verse gives us out first taste of MavAngelo’s soft, pleading vocals, and the instrumental composition hits its full glory in the chorus, rich with keys and a steady undercurrent of bass.

There’s a loveliness of it all that feels like audible balm, but the substance of its story and the emotion of the vocals gives the track plenty of depth.

An independent creator, MavAngelo is based in the Cotswolds. He’s a one-man band, singing, playing all his own instruments, and doing his own production, leading to a sound that feels very authentic. I’m glad to have discovered him.

You can keep up to date with all he’s doing by following him on Spotify, YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok.

FadingSkies is out now, and you can listen to it below.
