Discovery: Michelle Lynne Unites Two Musical Worlds on Her Genre‑Crossing Debut One Step At a Time

How exactly does one bridge the gap between classical and modern pop? It’s a question that Michelle Lynne attempts to answer on her new album, One Step At A Time.

By Graeme Smith

The title feels right for a collection that is a journey, and an emotional one at that. Throughout the album, Lynne proves a master of tugging at the heartstrings, whether that’s with heartache or whimsy.

Well-crafted piano instrumentals rub shoulders with vocal-led pop numbers meaning we get a full picture of Lynne’s talents. Even individual tracks are cast with different dyes as some of the album’s most standout moments get piano-only renditions.

Somehow, Lynne merges her two worlds, infusing her Vanessa Carlton-esque piano-pop with surprise classical deviations. Jeux D’eau and Au bord d’une source stand out for sitting firmly in the latter category, giving us some playfulness among the emotional heaviness.

Ultimately, the album expresses hope, typified by moments such as the soul-searching Hold On, the brooding Let Me Heal, and the affirmative I’m Here. These tracks show the album’s healing journey most prominently and shows us that Lynne is as strong a singer as she is a pianist. The journey is told against a thematic backdrop that includes water, rebirth, and authenticity.

“These songs were birthed out of necessity,” Lynne says. “I wrote them to understand what I was going through. Music has always been healing for me, and I wanted this album to become that kind of space for others to sit with themselves and come to a place of stillness.”

The story is bookended by In The In-Between. A piano version opens the album, and its vocal version comes late on. It’s a smart choice as the anthem captures the essence of the album perfectly and revisiting it reminds us of all that’s come before. It’s a highlight.

Ranging from the joyful to the painful to the meditative, One Step At A Time truly has something for everyone. It’s a powerful debut from an artist who is already proving her credentials. Prior to this release, the Canada-based classically trained Lynne had performed in over 500 concerts and has already amassed over 100,000 streams. Her first independent release cements her reputation as one to watch.
