Live Review: Horrible Histories The Concert Brings Monarchs, Mayhem and Music to York Barbican

Recently, the Barbican was taken over by some of history’s most notorious monarchs and larger‑than‑life figures in a roof‑raising concert.

Featuring many of Horrible Histories’ most legendary songs, the show was both entertaining and educational – something for the whole family to enjoy.

The ensemble cast, dressed in immersive, dazzling costumes, all put 110% into their performances.

It was truly a treat that Richie Webb, composer of all the TV show’s brilliant, witty songs, was a key part of the performance. The hundreds of songs he’s written over the years – often spins on pop and rock classics – are culturally iconic to multiple generations.

Hosted by Shakespeare himself (Richard David‑Caine), the storyline was smooth, engaging, and fine-tuned – hitting every beat for the young audience. Richard was genius with his audience interaction, maintaining high energy and sharp comedic timing throughout. With his cartoon-like vocal and physical comedy, he expertly carried the weight of such a tough role.

The final number – what the whole show had been building towards – didn’t disappoint. It had everyone – kids, parents, grandparents, reluctant older siblings – on their feet dancing.

The concert was a fantastic family day out.

Horrible Histories The Concert was performed at York Barbican on Tuesday 7 April 2026.
