Iceland is one country we really don’t get to hear much music from, so I was very excited to discover Icelandic afro-beat pop starlet Sjana Rut and her new song Tell Me, which we reviewed earlier this month in our review of female artists. Tell Me really is a catchy tune, so if you’re into this style of music, it would be a real crime if you missed out on it – give the track a whirl at the end of our interview with Sjana.

How has your year been so far? All positive I hope?
This year has been full of surprises! I’ve reached a really exciting career milestone with my most recent song Tell Me, and it’s been genuinely fun and an honour to see the reactions to my new music.
You have a brand new single out titled Tell Me. What can you tell us about the song and how has the reception been so far?
It’s been amazing, with lots of positive feedback and radio play! Tell Me feels like part of a new chapter, and I’m really excited about this era and the direction my music is heading.
You’ve released a few singles this year already. Do you plan to release any more?
Yes! There’s lots of music on the way that I can’t wait to share.
Your last album release was Raunheimar in 2024. What can you tell us about the record, for those who haven’t checked it out yet?
Raunheimar (meaning Real Worlds) is an Icelandic folk-pop album filled with true stories, both from people I’ve met along the way and from my own experiences. Some stories are heavy, others are sweet, but together they showcase the moments that make life beautiful and worth living.
Are there any plans to release a full-length album or EP in the near future?
Yes! There is a new album coming later this year, as well as a vinyl release, which I’ll be announcing very soon.
You’re from Iceland. What is the current music scene like in your part of the world?
It’s very diverse. Some artists lean into alternative music with cinematic and fantasy-driven soundscapes, while others embrace fun, colourful pop. There are so many talented artists here and honestly, Iceland itself feels like a magical place to create from.
What/who would you say are your main musical influences?
I grew up surrounded by a buffet of music, so my influences are quite varied. I was inspired by Jean-Michel Jarre’s dreamy, otherworldly atmospheres, soulful and jazzy voices like Nat King Cole and Big Mama Thornton, as well as the attitude and energy of rock and punk.
I also grew up on electronic music such as La Roux, Yazoo, Aqua and Yello. Today, I’m heavily inspired by joyful, upbeat, bright music within the EDM and dance-pop world.
Do you perform live much? What can fans expect from a Sjana Rut concert?
I’m planning to do more live shows, gigs and pop-up performances. A Sjana Rut show is all about having a good time with high energy, a strong performance and a fun atmosphere for everyone there.
Are there any plans for a UK tour anytime soon?
I’d love to! Hopefully I’ll get the chance to bring my music to the UK in the near future.
Any last words for the fans?
I’m genuinely thankful for all the support and warmth I receive. I hope my music brings you the same joy and comfort that creating it brings me.
