Clocking in at just two tracks, The Wires Out EP by THROES NYC (the creative partnership of producer and multi-instrumentalist Michael Bosso and vocalist Courtney Leo) packs an extraordinary punch. Listening to the record feels exactly like catching a glimpse of a sprawling metropolis through a rain-streaked window at 3:00am, as the duo effortlessly curate a captivating, nocturnal world of their own here.

THROES NYC have perfectly blended their brand of moody, dark alt-pop with a selection of sultry trip-hop rhythms and textured electronic soundscapes to create a form of modern pop music with a sharp and melodic instinct. The Wires Out EP is pretty experimental (as you might have expected from that description), but there’s enough here to sink your teeth into, even with there only being two songs on the EP.
The first track is Always, Baby, which opens the EP up nicely with a smooth, enveloping electronic vibe that hooks you into the duo’s world instantly. Courtney Leo’s vocals carry a deep and resonant sense of honesty as they’re given ample room to breathe over a lush, magnetic instrumental arrangement. It’s an intimate piece of work that sets the tone perfectly for the next track, which just so happens to be my favourite of the two tunes on The Wires Out EP.
That song is Something Chemical – the track shifts the energy upwards by increasing the tempo, leaning into a darker, more restless mood. Living up to its name, Something Chemical perfectly captures the powerful, almost uncontrollable driving beat, also featuring a selection of catchy and infectious melodies that will keep keep you coming back for another listen, long into the future.
It may be short and sweet, but The Wires Out EP is a masterclass in economic songwriting, allowing THROES NYC to pack a dense, lingering mood into two carefully sculpted tracks. The duo have successfully managed to map out the push-and-pull feeling of modern connection without making the mix sound too busy, which is a real triumph in itself. It’s clear from the first listen that The Wires Out EP is a midnight gem designed for late-night drives and quiet introspection – if that sounds like your sort of thing, you should check the record out below!
