On his new EP Existentialism, independent singer-songwriter Jared Bond has taken a delightfully defiant stance against the commercial music industry of old. There may be only two tracks on this record, but each song is a thoughtful alternative-indie tune that looks at key concepts such as mortality, time and human consciousness, creating something really unique in the process.

Opening the release with an expansive sound is Nothing Lasts Forever, a song that immediately establishes the contemplative tone of the record. It was recorded in a pretty unconventional manner (for example, the drums were captured in a public library), but Jared has still managed to create a warm and dreamy indie-folk tune with a slight psychedelic bent. The lyricism is pretty good too, seeing Jarden discuss the impermanence of existence, changing what would normally be a heavy nihilistic topic into a strangely liberating reminder to appreciate the present day.
The second track on Existentialism is Miracle, which shifts the lyrical lens towards the quiet awe of everyday consciousness. The music is lush and sounds wonderfully textured throughout, using some interesting guitar lines and rhythms to make a lovely harmonic piece of music. The songs has a gentle, almost meditative quality to it, with the brass instrumentation adding something extra special into the mix.
Existentialism is a concise and fiercely independent triumph for Jared Bond, resulting in a highly refreshing release that should surely change the indie world for the better. By marrying thoughtful, boundary-pushing concepts with an organic sense of craftsmanship, Jared has truly delivered a project that feels grounded and intimate. Ultimately, this EP is a tangible reminder that asking the big questions is often far more rewarding than finding simple solutions – particular when the music sounds this good!
