EP Review: Lyndo Jaco – 3

Rock recluse Lyndo Jaco is a new discovery of mine, having recently released a killer new EP that is simply titled 3. As you might have guessed from the title of this record, there are three key songs on here – this may seem pretty short to some readers, but I’m pleased to announce that there’s plenty here to sink your teeth into. 3 sees Lyndo leaning into a much more stripped-back approach, allowing the crackling guitar strings and natural backing effects to really take hold. Each song acts as a distinct narrative vignette, bound together by the rock and roll pulse that beats nicely throughout the EP.

The record begins with opener Feeling, breathing life into the record straight away with the classic rock guitar lick that appears in the intro. The groove manages to instantly establish the warm ambiance of 3, using lyrical metaphors to describe the feeling of gritty and loyal resilience, in the face of all odds. The production quality and vocals are a little raw at times, but this quality actually helps to make the music sound much more genuine, adding a tense vulnerability to the music.

It was for keeps the classic rock and roll vibes going, although Lyndo still manages to shift the lyrics into a more narrative-driven space. However, whilst the focus is more on the lyrical content here, the music still carries a heavy weight, with the driving rhythm heightening the tension throughout. It may sound pretty simple at first, but the arrangement actually works really well with the style that Lyndo is trying to cultivate on the record.

Finally, we come to closer Whats happening, which changes things up remarkably. Yes, it still has the big rock and roll sound of the previous songs on 3, but there’s also something a little more psychedelic about this song. It’s pretty hypnotic at times, rounding out the thirteen minute journey taken on this EP in style with a dose of philosophical curiosity.

If you’re a fan of concise, story-driven records with a raw and unfiltered sound, then Lyndo Jaco’s new EP 3 may appeal to you, as it’s a real triumph of DIY authenticity. The songs on 3 prove that you need to have a massive budget to make an impression on the music world, and despite the raw production quality, there’s still a lot to love here – particularly after repeated listens.
