Opener Feeling, introduces listeners to Halloran’s catchy instrumentals and powerful lyrics. The track begins with a steady guitar riff before being joined by strong, clear vocals. The lyrics stand out on this track: “Had the thought but not the feeling. Guess the timing means I’m healing… Had the dream but not the fever. Guess I’m no longer your believer.” The song creates a sense of nostalgia. Around halfway through, an electric guitar solo adds another layer to the track, before the vocals return to create an impactful blend of instrumentals and lyrics.

Kind is a calming acoustic, emotional exploration. The singer describes this track as an examination of “what it means to be kind in a world where isolation, disappointment, and uncertainty are more often than not the norm.” This positive track is followed by Lighthouse Head, which switches the tone to a heavy beat, powerful instrumentals, and strong vocals. This rock song creates an expansive, sweeping energy.

Contrition was co-written and performed with Jes Hudak and is a vulnerable, honest outpouring of emotion featuring ruminative lyrics: “Are we each the other’s white noise… you know I never meant to be this way.” The two voices weave together to create a narrative that explores the realities of human connection.

I Want, is a loud, confident song, where electric guitar meets Halloran’s resonant vocals: “Cover every exit, need some clear perspective.” The song feels gritty and raw, creating a rock energy that makes a striking impression on listeners. The following track, I Need, is a complete switch in tone. Sitting at just under two minutes, it is an honest reflection on the relationship we have with ourselves: “I need a break from me.” The song fades out towards the end with recurring lyrics that highlight this looping mindset.

This album showcases Halloran’s versatility as a musician, with tracks that shift from powerful vocals and catchy instrumentals to more vulnerable, acoustic, and introspective songs. Ultimately, Marauder (That Was Once Joy) is a compelling exploration of the human experience, leaving listeners with lots to contemplate.
