Blues music has long been defined by the dark themes contained within the genre, often built upon the cathartic sounds of sorrow, heartbreak and resilience through trauma. However, Vancouver-based singer-songwriter and producer Charm has managed to flip the style on its head with her standout new single, The anti-blues.
By Jane Howkins
On The anti-blues, Charm takes the classic blues sound and invigorates it by adding in moments of jazz and swing – alongside the more positive lyrical themes, it all makes for a song that sounds like a joyous celebration of love and contentment. The anti-blues is also remarkably atmospheric as a whole, transporting the listener straight into the aura of a retro dive bar. There’s an unmistakeable stride and swagger to Charm’s newest song, which manages to balance the dynamic tempo shifts with the laid-back verses in an astounding way – everything just works, and perhaps more than it should! The anti-blues is one song sure to take the blues away – check it out on Charm’s Bandcamp page below!
