A crowd of live music lovers assembled in The Spread Eagle on Friday night to swing their hips to a dynamic duo of sets. Tipped to be the next breakthough act of 2015, John McCullagh & The Escorts came to town, and were ably supported by York’s own Hello Operator.
From the start of their set, it was clear why Hello Operator are frequently name-checked by other York musicians as one of the best bands around these parts. Starting mellow, front man Max Dalton took to the stage on his own, building through a first verse as the rest of the band came on, set up and then burst a collective note that kicked off some bluesy, gritty rock and roll.
And they didn’t let up, playing with swagger, energy, and enough sound to fill a venue ten times bigger, contrasting between cool riffs and simply going mental, through the head-nodding-inducing Goliath to the complex psych rock odyssey of Hallucination Lucifer, before closing with the Hendrix-esque Black Betty Child.
The crowd were perfectly warmed up for the main attraction. John McCullagh, a Doncaster boy set to become a national indie star, who was joined on stage by his Liverpool-based band The Escorts. They’ve been busy recording an album and playing gigs across the country supporting the likes of Cast, but there was no diminishing their youthful energy.

Hello Operator
With a harmonica intro, the Bob Dylan connection was immediately obvious, but this was Dylan growing up in the North of England, typified by the track Angel of the North. Their set was tinged with brit pop as well as folk influences. New single She’s Calling Me in particular was a swinging, melodic crowd pleaser.

John McCullagh and the Escorts
John McCullagh & The Escorts are fronted by a young lyricist who’s cracked the key to writing relatable songs. He’s joined by a group of talented musicians that turn John’s stories into songs that you can dance to. If that isn’t the right equation for success in today’s music industry, what is?
