Quicksilver is the new album from York rock legends Van Der Neer, and it’s a bit of a barnstormer.
By Graeme Smith
Van Der Neer were one of the first bands we covered way back in 2014 when they took to the stage of MOR Music on Rails and we’ve been watching them closely ever since. Quicksilver represents a culmination of their sound since then, featuring 11 hard-rocking tracks.
Van Der Neer is music for rock traditionalists with dirty blues riffs, guitar licks and hip-shaking rhythms. Lead singer Simon Snaize delivers his lines with energy and attitude. Lead single Everybody Knows is a clear highlight on Quicksilver, with riffs amped up to eleven and a singalong chorus. When we featured it before, Jane described it as “a mix between Led Zeppelin, Muse, and Royal Blood,” and it fits nicely on the LP.
There are quieter moments too, title track Quicksilver being a case in point with soulful interludes followed by a big finish. Don’t Give It Up is a lovelorn blues ballad. Album closer You Carry On is a melodious, uplifting anthem.
Quicksilver is a sterling effort from some York rock veterans and they should be proud of what they’ve created. Already well known around these parts, we hope the full-length will increase their notoriety further afield.
Quicksilver by Van Der Neer is out now, available as a digital download from BandCamp and can be streamed below.
