Carson McHone has released a new single Sad and has also unveiled a 2019 UK Tour.
Sad is Carson McHone’s first music video and although its familiar barroom setting is one many of us will recognise from country music videos (indeed the location is one McHone knows well – The White Horse in Austin, TX is a place both played at and frequented by the artist) the rest of the film is deliciously off kilter, as Carson explains:
“We are dealing with an abstract concept, the inner struggle with self, so I wanted the backdrop to be obviously staged to illustrate this metaphor. ….we weren’t trying to capture a night at the White Horse. We wanted the honky tonk thing to be a bit of a tease, the video opens with shots that could be out of your typical two stepping scene, but then all the chairs are up and the bar is obviously closed and there are two clowns dancing and moping about. Anyone who knows the bar will recognise it, but it was really just a stage for the theatricals, and a nod to those who know… ”
McHone was an ideal collaborator, acknowledges Artistic Director Steph Carll, “Because of her lack of vanity and respect for performance of all types, we had the freedom to do something playful, theatrical, abstract. Knowing she shies away from conventional trends of genre, we wanted to create a unique and striking visual story–a stand-alone piece of art that both tips a hat and sticks a tongue out to her roots.”
It transpires that a pair of two-stepping clowns in a honky-tonk bar is actually the perfect visual accompaniment to this beautiful song.
Sad is taken from Carson McHone’s upcoming album Carousel, released 25th Jan 2019 on Loose.
Carson McHone will be touring the UK in February 2019 with a date at The Basement in York on February 4th.
