Next Wednesday, Leeds-based DOMI will be hosting their first ever UK headline performance at The Wardrobe in Leeds. We took the opportunity to learn a bit more about them, their passions and what they have in store for the audience.
Interview by Graeme Smith
DOMI is a band consisting of members from England, Norway and Czech Republic. How did you all meet and what inspired you to form a band?
We all met at Leeds College of Music and primarily formed as part of lead singer Dominika’s uni project. Through this we discovered how much we loved making this music together and decided to take the project further.
How would you describe your sound to anyone who hasn’t heard you before?
Electronic Pop with hints of drum ’n’ bass & jazz
What are your influences, musically and non-musically?
Sigrid, Highasakite and Submotion Orchestra
You’re playing your first ever UK headline show in next Wednesday. Tell us what you have in store for the people of Leeds?
We’ve been writing new material for this show, a couple of dancey songs and one ballad, to go with our usual set. These two songs will debut at this show, as will a few mysterious twists!
All the proceeds will be going to the MAP charity. Why is that?
MAP is really important in helping people access music who don’t have the resources to do so otherwise. We are so grateful to be making music we love to play and to have found each other to create this band, we want to give something back so others can do and feel the same as us.
How would you describe the Leeds music scene right now?
There are different pockets of scenes in Leeds, underground electronic, contemporary jazz and alternative rock are just a few. What’s great about Leeds is that you are able to meet mostly everyone in a scene, so getting to know other like-minded people is easy. And everyone’s very supportive of each other.
Any recording plans at the moment?
Yes! We are currently in the process of recording a few more singles with our producer Frankie Harper which will be out later this year.
DOMI will play at The Wardrobe in Leeds on Wednesday 12 June 2019.
